My sweet boy has the dreaded "rodent virus" swollen lip ulcers - food change?

I have traded his bowls for glass, keep everything immaculate. Online searching has suggested a food change. He only eats regular cat kibble - anyone had any success with a new diet? Also - who on earth came up rodent virus for this condition?
