need advice for postbacc
hello! as the title says i need some help figuring out what to do for my postbacc!
for some background info, im a recent June 2026 graduate and to be quite honest my college career was quite rough, i had an up and down trend in my academics. i was working full time the whole 4 years to help provide for my family since my father was chronically ill, and he passed away last year in my third year of college. as a first gen, disadvantaged student i need some help navigating what to do :( i was accepted to a SMP but i had to withdraw from the courses due to the cost and new loan limits
My father is my biggest aspiration in becoming a doctor and I want to apply in the 2027 cycle to start in 2028. I am currently work full time as a dermatology MA and studying for the mcat, aiming to take it in February.
here are my stats so far:
- cGPA: 3.2 sGPA: sub 3.0
- graduated from a UC school
- ~300 biomedical engineering research hours in Alzheimer’s disease
- Art course learning assistant for two quarters
- physiology lab learning assistant for one quarter
- Oral english tutor for international graduate students for two years
- front desk/student assistant at my campus’s international center
- I’ll have an anticipated ~1400+ hours of clinical experience from my medical assistant job when i apply
Non related work experience:
- worked as a McDonald’s manager from my senior year of highschool to third year of college
- worked as a retail sales manager my last year of college
I am working on seeking out volunteering opportunities right now as well as looking for to shadow different specialties.
Should i do a DIY post bacc at a community college? Would that show i can succeed in medical school if I do well? I was also looking at the UCLA/UCB extension courses, are those any good?
I am open to any suggestions or recommendations on what I should do academically and personally to improve my application! Thank you :)
