How great was John Shields as a gunsmith during the Lewis and Clark Expedition?

I am reading more and more about him. He is my great great great grandfather. I see that he also had more skills than just gunsmith. Though reading through it, it seems that he was too good to get rid of even after he threatened to kill a sergeant.
