Moen single handle faucet squeak

My single handle faucet was hard to turn and open and close so Moen sent me a new valve and grease which I installed and it helped a little for a short time. Now they sent me a new mechanism. (Their support is unbeatable.). My question is, do I have to turn off the water to replace the mechanism above the valve. The valve stays but I will be pulling out the staple that goes through the plastic part and holds down the valve. I am thinking yes, otherwise that staple would not be there. I am hoping no because it involves turning off the water for the house because the gate valves underneath the sink will likely leak. Thanks for your help.
