.codex/sessions is almost 11 GB and seems to make the Desktop App laggy
My .codex/sessions folder keeps growing, and some individual conversations are now several GB each. The whole folder is getting close to 11 GB, and I started noticing Codex Desktop becoming increasingly laggy with some of these long-running sessions.
So I built Codex Vault, an open-source CLI for safely archiving and compacting Codex conversations:
https://github.com/nassim-arifette/codex-vault
The main goal is to reduce the size of huge rollout files without blindly deleting history.
Before modifying a conversation, Vault creates and verifies a recovery snapshot. It also checks whether the session can be safely compacted based on Codex's reconstruction structure, and refuses layouts it can't prove safe.
It currently supports things like:
- safe archive / compaction / restore
- integrity checks with
doctor - local search over old conversation history
- a read-only MCP interface so Codex can search archived history
I've mainly focused on making the destructive part conservative rather than trying to support every possible session layout.
I'm also planning a separate repair module later. I have a few conversations where the agent can still continue with the correct context, but the UI only shows a much older part of the conversation. While looking into it, I found other people reporting similar broken-history / indexing issues, so I'd like Vault eventually to diagnose and repair those too.
It's still an early preview, so I'd especially be interested in feedback from people with very large .codex/sessions folders or unusually long-running Codex threads.
If anyone here has multi-GB conversations, I'd also be curious how large yours have gotten.
