iPhone 15 Pro Max (unsure of iOS)

Found an iPhone 15 Pro Max while snorkeling in a lake. I charged it and it turned out. I tracked the owner using AI face search of the background, but they said they already replaced it and stopped replying.

It’s been 2 months so I wanted to see about unlocking it. The lock screen says “your passcode is required when iPhone resets”.

After researching here a bit it seems like I should NOT restore/wipe the phone in case it’s activation locked, right? I put it into recovery mode and plugged into my Mac but it says “unlock iPhone to use accesory” and it doesn’t give me any info on iOS version.

Any tips here to make sure I don’t brick the phone? Any way to tell if it’s activation locked prior to wiping it?
