Best card strategy for Australia trip: Magnus for Burgundy vs IndusInd Avios? ₹70k–₹1.5L international POS spend
I’m traveling to Australia later this year and trying to figure out which cards I should use for regular offline/POS spending there.
Cards relevant to this comparison:
1. Axis Magnus for Burgundy
- 12 EDGE RP / ₹200 up to ₹1.5L eligible spend in a calendar month
- 35 EDGE RP / ₹200 on incremental eligible spend above ₹1.5L
- 2% forex markup
- I understand M4B has 5:4 transfers to several airline partners, although not every partner has the same ratio.
2. IndusInd Avios Visa Infinite
- I have selected Australia/New Zealand/Far East as my preferred international destination.
- Australia POS transactions should therefore earn 6 Avios / ₹200
- Forex markup at the preferred destination is 1.5%
- Online transactions have a different earn rate, so I'm specifically asking about physical POS transactions in Australia.
3. Other cards I have:
- Axis Select
- Axis Rewards
- Amex Platinum Travel
- Amex Membership Rewards
- HDFC Tata Neu Infinity
- HDFC Millennia
- HDFC Swiggy
- Amazon Pay ICICI
My expected Australia card spend is probably around ₹70,000–₹1,50,000, mostly restaurants/shopping/local expenses, etc. I'll obviously choose AUD rather than INR at POS terminals to avoid DCC.
My initial calculation for ₹1 lakh POS spend:
- Avios: ~3,000 Avios + 1.5% forex
- M4B: ~6,000 EDGE RP + 2% forex
- If those 6,000 EDGE can be transferred at 5:4 to a useful partner, that's ~4,800 airline miles.
So despite the extra 0.5% forex, M4B appears potentially better on pure rewards. But I'm not sure this is the right way to value the two currencies, especially for realistic redemptions.
My travel/redemption pattern: I'm based in Bangalore. For flights under roughly 6 hours (Thailand/Vietnam/Dubai etc.), I'm happy flying economy. I'd generally save business-class redemptions for longer trips such as Australia/Europe.
Another complication is that my normal credit-card spend is around ₹1L–₹1.7L/month, but after the recent exclusions/changes on Magnus, I may not organically cross ₹1.5L of eligible spend every month. So I'm also questioning whether keeping M4B, with its high annual fee, still makes sense for me.
Questions for M4B/Avios users:
- For ₹50k / ₹1L / ₹1.5L of POS spend in Australia, which card would you actually use?
- Am I calculating the Magnus vs Avios reward return correctly?
- Which 5:4 M4B transfer partners currently give the best practical value for someone based in BLR?
- Does the answer change substantially if I naturally cross ₹1.5L eligible M4B spend during the same calendar month?
- Any recent IndusInd Avios users who have actually received 6 Avios/₹200 and 1.5% forex in Australia/preferred destination without having to chase IndusInd?
- Given my ₹1L–₹1.5L normal monthly card spend, would you keep Magnus Burgundy or move that spend to Avios/another card?
Not looking for theoretical 5–10₹/mile valuations based on one unicorn business-class redemption. I'd particularly appreciate real-world redemption value and recent experiences from people holding either/both cards.
