We spent 18 months building AI photo delivery for wedding photographers. Here is what we learned.

Around eighteen months ago I started building Snaptide, an AI powered photo delivery platform for wedding and event photographers. The problem came from photographers themselves. Guests cannot find themselves in four thousand photos. They scroll for a while, give up, and then message the photographer asking where their pictures are. Photographers were spending their evenings tagging faces by hand or answering the same question over and over.

The idea was simple on paper. Upload the album once. Let each guest upload a selfie. Show every guest only the photos they appear in. Private, no app to install, no endless scrolling.

The beta phase taught us more than we expected, so here are the honest lessons.

Lesson one: we were not fast enough at the start. Early users hit rough edges, stalled uploads, and face matching that took way too long. We rebuilt the processing pipeline twice. The version running today shares almost nothing with the first one we launched. Speed is not a feature for us anymore. It is the product.

Lesson two: free can quietly kill you. We ran a long open beta and gave the platform away for months. It felt generous and it felt right. Then the server bills arrived and I realised I was financially burdened by my own kindness. We moved to paid plans, kept a real free tier, and never looked back. If you are building a SaaS, price it early and price it honestly.

Lesson three: India pricing behaves differently. Yearly plans win here. Lifetime plans are far more popular than I expected. A plain 50% launch offer did more than any complicated discount ever would. And the real competitor we hear about is not another photo platform. It is Google Drive.

Lesson four: WhatsApp notifications almost sank us. Guests love getting a message the moment their photos are live. But every message costs us about eighty five paise, and a wedding has hundreds of guests. The feature was great and the economics were brutal. We ended up building a credit system to keep it alive.

Some numbers, since founders always ask. Today the platform has delivered over 6.8 million photo downloads, indexed about 3.5 million faces, and hosted more than a thousand events. A guest finds their photos in about four seconds on average.

We are still a small team, we still reply to support messages ourselves, and we are still learning. If you shoot weddings and have opinions on photo delivery, or you are building something for photographers, I would love to hear from you. Ask me anything.
