Bad starting?

Advice

Brutally honest?

I'm translating this from italian to English 'cause it's not my first language, but what's your thoughts?

My character is the stereotypical blonde rich girl but she gets character development as the story goes. This is my first attempt at writing something ever.

Is this too bad?

It wasn't supposed to go this way.

There are so many things I could say about myself, but they would be lies. That's exactly what my mother would say.

But would you believe me if I told you we did it for a good cause?

Today is October 15th, and like every year, I find myself in church lighting a candle for the disappearance of Lacy Trescott. Why do I think it's right to wake up at dawn every October 15th to light a candle before school? That's another story.

I look at Lacy's photo, dozens of candles already lit, people from the island coming and going just to leave a gesture of solidarity and keep hope alive.

I start to think about how many people would have been there for me, if only the one who vanished into thin air had been me. After a while, I cough away the thought. I have to stop this toxic competition. I look around as if someone could read my mind, a little embarrassed of myself.

I spare a last glance at the frame containing Lacy's photo and then decide to leave. You know, my driver doesn't like to wait too long.
