AITA for telling my cousin to STFU after she kept ranting about my daughter at a family gathering?
I (38F) was at a family gathering yesterday with my daughter (15F). My daughter has OCD and ADHD and one of her main takeaways is having pretty severe sensory issues. She absolutely hates being touched by people, especially unexpectedly. Majority of our close family knows this and does not touch her.
My cousin (40F) came up to me and my daughter to greet us and tried to hug my daughter. My daughter backed away from her and asked her please not to touch her.
My cousin, then got offended told her that she needed to respect her elders and that she was only trying to give her a friendly hug. I explained to my cousin that my daughter has sensory issues and does not like being touched. I explained she wasn’t trying to be disrespectful I, myself don’t even touch her because of this. After this my daughter left to go talk to her aunt.
My cousin then said that I was spewing bullshit and giving a lame excuse and that my daughter was old enough to know how to behave around adults. I told her again that my daughter saying she doesn’t want to be touched isn’t disrespectful, and she needs to respect that.
She then started going on and on about how disrespectful my daughter was and how I have raised a very disrespectful child. I told my cousin to just drop it and that i’m not going to force my daughter into giving her a hug if I know she specifically hates hugs.
Instead of my cousin dropping this, she called another relative over and started telling them how disrespectful my daughter had been and how kids these days don’t respect their elders.
At that point I got really annoyed and told my cousin to shut the fuck up. I said my daughter said she didn’t want to be touched and that should have been the end of it.
The gathering itself continued, but my cousin was extremely offended and kept telling other family members that I embarrassed and disrespected her in front of everyone. Thankfully a lot of close family already knows my daughter has sensory issues so they told my cousin to drop it.
Now a family friend keeps texting me saying I was wrong for speaking to my cousin that way and that I should have handled it like an adult and just told my daughter to give her a hug and that she would be fine.
I understand that telling someone to stfu isn’t exactly polite and I understand wanting to hug someone as a friendly gesture, however I also understand that my daughter does not like being touched. I was tired of listening to my daughter being called disrespectful for having a clear boundary.
