Advice on proxy/ 3-d printed vs GW

My son and I have recently just got into 40k/ KT, (me orks him tyranids.

so far we’ve been playing Kill Team with a couple official sets that we have.
I have the extra box and have been using the squighog boyz to play Orks vs ravaners.
He wants the real stuff as that’s what his friends are playing and that matters to him. I’m more OK with 3-d printed stuff but worried about scale of prints. The money saved could mean we play more sooner.

What’s your advice on buying up 2 armies at same time and not spending soooooo much?
Is printed the way to go for my orks?
