Title: Accepted ECs for an exam I missed, but I've been left with 21% despite Credit on Aggregate – is there anything I can do?
I'm a third-year Psychology student at the University of Edinburgh and I've just received my results following the August reassessment period. I'm hoping someone familiar with Edinburgh's Exceptional Circumstances/Board of Examiners rules might be able to help.
For context, I was already completing a substantial number of assessments during the August reassessment period because I had previously been granted Exceptional Circumstances after being the victim of a serious crime during the academic year. The circumstances surrounding that were also still affecting me, and the reassessment period was already pretty intense and exhausting.
I completed all of my other reassessments. DAPR was the only reassessment I didn't complete.
My grandfather then died the night before my DAPR exam. At that point, on top of everything else and an already exhausting reassessment period, I just didn't feel capable of sitting the exam. In hindsight, obviously I really wish I had managed to do it, but that was genuinely how I felt at the time.
I submitted Exceptional Circumstances relating to my grandfather's death for the reassessment period, and these were accepted.
The DAPR exam was worth 66.67% of the course. I had already completed the other DAPR assessment, a group report worth 33.33%, and received 63.4%. Because I didn't sit the exam, however, it has been recorded as 0%, leaving me with an overall DAPR course mark of 21%.
The Board of Examiners has now awarded me the 10 DAPR credits through Credit on Aggregate, meaning I can progress unconditionally into Year 4. However, they've told me that the original 21% course mark stands and will remain on my transcript.
This has had quite a significant impact on my Year 3 average. My results are:
- QIMP: 65% (10 credits)
- Psychology of Conversation: 64% (20)
- PIA: 72% (10)
- Mini Dissertation: 60.3% (20)
- DCNC: 72.9% (20)
- Social Psychology of Groups & Bias: 68% (20)
- Critical Analysis: 75% (10)
- DAPR: 21% (10)
Across the other 110 credits, my average is approximately 67.5%. Including DAPR brings my overall Year 3 average down to approximately 63.6%.
I'm confused about how DAPR has been treated compared with some of my other EC-affected courses.
For example, in another 10-credit course I completed a 500-word essay originally worth 30% and received 72%. The remaining assessment, a presentation worth 70%, was completely disregarded because of my ECs. The 30% essay was therefore effectively used to determine my entire course result, giving me a final mark of 72%.
With DAPR, I've similarly completed approximately one third of the assessment at 63.4%, but rather than the missing component being disregarded, it has remained as 0% and I've instead been given Credit on Aggregate.
I understand that there may be a legitimate academic reason for the difference — for example, the DAPR exam may assess learning outcomes that the group report alone cannot demonstrate. I'm also not expecting the university to simply give me a mark for an exam I didn't sit.
I'm mainly wondering whether anyone familiar with Edinburgh's rules knows:
-
Given that my grandfather died the night before the exam and my ECs for this were accepted, is there any possibility of being allowed to complete the outstanding assessment during Year 4?
-
Could the missing exam potentially be disregarded and my DAPR result derived from my completed work, as happened with another EC-affected course?
-
If neither is possible, can an EC-affected course result like this be disregarded when calculating my eventual Honours classification, even if the 21% remains visible on my transcript?
-
Is Credit on Aggregate essentially the end of the matter, or would it be worth seeking a review/appeal of the Board's chosen outcome?
I'm particularly worried because I'm planning to apply for Graduate Entry Law programmes. I worked extremely hard throughout the reassessment period and managed to complete every other reassessment despite everything that was happening. It feels pretty devastating for my Year 3 average to drop by almost four percentage points because of the one exam I couldn't bring myself to sit, particularly when the circumstances affecting that exam were accepted by the university.
I'm contacting my Student Adviser as well, so I'm not relying on Reddit for official advice. I'm mainly interested in whether anyone has experienced something similar at Edinburgh or knows how situations like this are normally handled.
