Title: Need advice: 7.5 LPA job with very little work — should I stay or switch?

I’m a B.Tech graduate and currently working in a tech company. I joined in December 2025 as a fresher at around ₹7.5 LPA. I had around 2 months of training, and my team was allocated around March 2026.

The problem is that since joining the team, I’ve had very little actual work. Apart from roughly one month where I was genuinely working on tasks, I’ve mostly been sitting without much to do because there simply aren’t enough tasks being assigned to me.

Initially this bothered me a lot, but I’ve started using the free time to prepare for CAT. Since the company doesn't really have work for me at the moment, I have a lot of time available for preparation.

My current plan is to stay in this company until December 2027 rather than quitting, while preparing for CAT. By then, I would have around 2 years of full-time work experience.

The main reason I'm hesitant to leave is that ₹7.5 LPA is a pretty decent salary for a fresher, and my current job is relatively comfortable. So I'm wondering whether it makes sense to give up this situation just to get more work experience elsewhere.

However, I'm worried about what happens in both possible outcomes:

  1. If I get a good CAT score and receive interview calls:

Will having 2 years of work experience where I haven't done much substantial work become a problem during IIM/FMS/other MBA interviews? Obviously I would have to explain what I actually did during those 2 years.

Would interviewers care about the quality of my work, or is the fact that I have 2 years of full-time work experience itself useful?

  1. If CAT doesn't work out:

Would it be a bad idea to stay in this company for 2 years with such limited work and then try to switch? I'm worried that I'll have 2 years of experience on paper but not enough actual skills/projects to clear interviews at another company.

So essentially, I'm confused about whether I'm making a smart decision by staying in a relatively well-paying, comfortable job and using the free time to prepare for CAT, or whether I should actively try to get more work / switch jobs and build actual experience.

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have either:

* had very little work in their first 1–2 years,

* prepared for CAT while working,

* gone through IIM/FMS interviews with similar work experience, or

* switched jobs after having relatively weak/limited experience.

What would you do in my situation?
