The UK will experience a typically changeable spell of September weather this week, with the jet stream helping to steer a succession of weather systems across the country.

This will bring rain and strong winds at times, but there will also be some useful drier and brighter intervals, especially during the middle of the week.

# A wet and windy start for some

Tuesday will begin with low pressure to the north of the UK, bringing blustery showers across northern areas. Further south, overnight rain will linger across parts of England and Wales, giving a wet start in places. Most of this rain will clear south-eastwards by early afternoon, although it may persist for a little longer in the far southeast.

Showers will affect Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England, with a few also reaching Wales and the Midlands. They will be heaviest and most frequent across Scotland, where hail and thunder are possible. Strong, gusty winds will accompany the showers, with gusts of 40 to 50 mph possible in exposed locations.

Western Scotland could receive 40 to 50mm of rain in places, potentially causing some localised disruption. The combination of heavy showers and gusty winds may also lead to difficult travelling conditions.

Brighter spells will develop as the rain clears southern areas, with lighter winds here. Temperatures will reach the low 20s Celsius in the south, but generally only the mid to high teens further north. It will feel noticeably fresher than Monday, particularly in the wind and showers.

# A quieter day on Wednesday

A ridge of high pressure will build overnight into Wednesday, allowing showers to ease and winds to become lighter. Clearer skies will lead to a chilly start, with temperatures falling into low single figures in some rural parts of Scotland. Towns and cities farther south should generally remain in double figures.

A few showers will continue around some northern and eastern coastal areas, where it will remain rather blustery. Isolated showers are also possible in the west, but most places will have a dry day with bright or sunny spells.

Temperatures will again reach the low 20s in the south and the mid to high teens further north. With lighter winds and more sunshine, it should feel pleasant in many areas.

# Rain returning from the west

Thursday will begin chilly in central and eastern areas, with temperatures falling into very low single figures in places. Some sheltered locations may dip a little below freezing, bringing the possibility of a touch of grass frost.

Many central and eastern areas will then have another fine day with sunny spells. However, a new frontal system will approach from the Atlantic, bringing cloud, rain and strengthening winds into western and northwestern areas. Rain may become heavier across western Scotland, although widespread large rainfall totals are not expected.

Temperatures will remain in the mid to high teens in the north and reach the low 20s in the south. With lighter winds and sunshine, southeastern areas should feel relatively warm.

# Some rain before a drier end to Friday

The weather system will move eastwards on Thursday night, with some heavier bursts possible across Wales and the Midlands early on Friday. Rain will continue south-eastwards during the morning, becoming lighter and more fragmented as it does so.

Drier conditions and occasional sunshine will follow, with temperatures potentially rising into the low or mid-20s in the south. However, another Atlantic system could bring wet and windy weather into northern and western areas on Saturday. Southern and eastern parts currently have a better chance of remaining dry.
