My assistantship supervisor keeps editing our work with AI and it’s costing us

Seeking advice-academic

I work on an anthropology research project through an institute at my campus which entails writing papers, completing community-facing projects and applying by for grants.

My boss is well known and respected in the field.

He doesn’t hide his use of AI; he thinks he is adjusting to the latest developments.

But it’s ruining everything we write. We lost a grant because he ran the application through AI before submitting it. The application had very specific requirements for which sections to answer certain questions in, and the AI rearranged it so we didn’t answer any of the questions in their required sections.

We conducted specific legal research for a project, and he asked AI to produce a legal policy. The laws that it based the policy on aren’t even relevant to our locality, and it was a bunch of nonsense (it kept repeating that the reason for the policy was to “avoid liability for ‘the parties’”).

And I can tell that he is writing his emails with AI (everyone can), and they are costing us relationships.

I’ve tried to reflect feedback and he generally appreciates it and will assign me to do a “human review,” but it’s not helping. I feel that time with which I should be doing PhD level research is spent correcting a machine’s error and reverting documents back to their drafts. And also, at the last second, he runs things back through AI before submitting anyways.

I reached out to the institute head a while back and framed it as trying to get everyone back in sync. The meetings went well and my immediate supervisor was responsive, although he doesn’t really agree with the institute head’s feedback. And since he is so well known, they give him tremendous leniency.

I am also constantly explaining and justifying our work to our partners, who can spot the AI from a mile away and are shifting their attention away from us (challenging, but I don’t even blame them).

I don’t really want my name tied to the AI, although I really love everything about this project if we take that away. It makes this even more frustrating. Plus, I need to stay with the project for my funding.

Help???
