Best place to buy a diamond ring

I ask a few friends where the best place to buy diamond ring is and got completely different answers from everyone. One said small family shops, another said big malls are safer and someone else mentioned online options. Now i am stuck comparing all these paths and none of them feel clearly better. Is there even a real difference in quality or is it mostly about trust and comfort with the seller?
