AITAH for not being ready to be friends with my ex when he came back much earlier than expected?
My ex (33M) and I (29F) were together for about three years. We broke up a few months ago & after some time, we talked about potentially becoming friends.
At one point, we were actually seeing each other occasionally as friends, and I was genuinely happy and enthusiastic about it. However, he was the one who eventually asked for a period of no contact, saying he needed around 6 months to move on, although he said he might be ready sooner, maybe after 3 months. I accepted that & mentally prepared myself for a long period of distance. I wasn't waiting around for him, I was moving on with my life and figured we'd see where we both were later.
He came back after about 3 weeks and said he was ready to be friends again. I told him that I still wanted the possibility of friendship, but that his coming back so much earlier than expected had actually destabilized me. I was still processing it and didn't feel ready to see him yet. During our conversation, he eventually said that he felt like he wasn't being "chosen" in the friendship.
I understand that he could be disappointed. Before he asked for the distance, I had been quite enthusiastic about seeing him, so I can understand why he might have expected the same reaction when he came back. But I don't understand why my needing more time means that I don't choose him as a friend. From my perspective, I didn't change my mind about wanting a friendship. I simply didn't expect him to come back after 3 weeks & I wasn't emotionally in the same place anymore.
So AITA for not being ready when he decided he was ready, despite previously being enthusiastic about the idea of friendship? Thank you for your insight
