Follow-up: My quest to accumulate a list of low-stakes comfort movies hit a major roadblock.
Following up on my last two posts about movies that entertain without trying too hard, I abruptly took a total U-turn and pivoted to the exact opposite: movies that try extremely hard, crank the stakes to maximum, and pull it off brilliantly.
How this transition happened: A random scene from Terminator 2 popped up on my YouTube feed, and I was completely hooked.
It got me thinking about high-stakes movies that manage to stay timeless for decades without feeling cheap or bloated. The only other film that immediately came to mind in that same tier of pure, high-stakes spectacle is Rocky 4.
Terminator 2 is the ultimate sci-fi action masterpiece—endless tension, iconic quotes, and stakes that involve saving the future of humanity.
Rocky 4 is peak 80s theatrical excess—Apollo Creed's tragedy, the brutal Cold War rivalry, the iconic training montage in Siberia, and Rocky carrying the weight of the nation on his back.
Both films go all-out on drama and spectacle, but they succeed because they nail the heart and execution.
For those following along: If you had to pick between these two classics, which one takes the crown for you—Terminator 2 or Rocky 4? And what other high-stakes blockbusters belong in this same elite tier?
