Looking for a work that I can read and learn from as an ESL writer.
Hello, I'm an beginner ESL writer who wants to write novels in English, and I'm looking for a work that I can use to learn English prose, vocabulary and other aspects.
I’m not looking for:
- The best or the most beautiful writing. My goal is to learn how to write clear, natural English with strong grammar and enough variety in vocabulary and sentence structure.
- Guidebook or book designed to teach writing. I want an actual story to read.
- How to develop ideas, plot a story, build a world, create characters, etc. My main focus is the writing and the English language itself
Here are the criteria:
1. Free and legally available online.
2. Cannot be long (I prefer short story in the range of 40k- 80k word. I am not too stress about word count.)
3. Uses simple language effectively while maintaining natural variety. I want to study how an author uses relatively common vocabulary, varied sentence structures, and different ways of phrasing things without sounding unnatural or relying on unnecessarily complicated words.
4. Easy to analyze. Everything such as grammar, tense, articles, prepositions, sentence construction, paragraph flow, and general naturalness. I want to be able to examine a passage and understand how and why it works.
5. Relatively efficient and consistent writing. I prefer a clear and stable writing style that communicates information effectively without excessive descriptions.
Basically, I'm looking for accessible, above-average work that I can realistically study and learn from as an ESL writer. I want to learn how to write English that is grammatically correct, natural, varied, and effective before trying to study highly literary prose.
(I prefer stories that are focused on emotional aspect. But almost any genre work for me)
