Story Suggestion - Joseph Barefoot Murder

Suggestion

This is a story that deserves much more coverage than it received back before the internet was as widely used.

In 1997 I was living in Columbia, South Carolina, working as a manager for a manufacturing company while also serving in a reserve M1A1 tank unit attached to Fort Jackson.

On Sunday, May 25, 1997, local news broke a story about a 12 year old boy named Joe Barefoot having gone missing and searches being done in the area. My impression from the initial coverage was that he was a bit mischievous (his own Mother described him as having a smart mouth and getting in occasional trouble at school) and I thought it most likely he was hiding nearby as a runaway... but as the days drug on, it became increasingly obvious that something serious must have happened to him.

Almost four months passed before any break in the case happened. Shockingly, his skeletal remains were found in a nearby wooded area where it was determined he had been beaten and his body had been tied to a tree.

Without sharing too many spoiler details regarding his murder, his killer was indeed identified but to this day has never voiced a clear motive. After a number of twists in court proceedings his killer was released after only having served approximately 12 years in prison (though he was originally sentenced to 42 years).

This case still haunts me to this day due to the killer not having been pushed to explain his motive(s) and actions. That, and Joe's death at such an early age and with relatively little national coverage makes me wish for his loss not to be forgotten.

Sharing a link to a show (Mystery In A Small Town) that summarizes the story fairly well.
