My boyfriend completely lost trust in me after I played one game with an old male friend. Is this normal?
TL;DR: I played one game with an old male friend while my boyfriend was asleep. He got upset that I didn’t tell him, so I agreed to remove the friend and only play with female friends. Since then he’s been checking my match history, monitoring when I’m online and even asking me to video call him to prove I’m playing alone. I haven’t given him any reason to think I’m cheating, but he says he still can’t trust me. I’m not sure if this is normal insecurity or if his behavior is becoming controlling.
Me (22F) and my boyfriend (25M) have been dating for almost a year. We never really had any serious issues until recently and now I’m not sure how to handle the situation.
We are both gamers on the free time, we met online through a game and used to play together all the time. A few months ago he got a job offer and temporarily moved to another country. It’s been about 3 months since then and unfortunately we don’t really get the chance to play together anymore.
The problem started one evening when he was asleep. I got on the game and an old male friend of mine who I’ve known online for about 4 years invited me to play one match. We used to be good friends, but we barely talk anymore, so I didn’t think much of it and accepted.
The next morning my boyfriend checked my match history and saw that I had played with another guy. He asked who it was, so I explained that he was just an old online friend. My boyfriend got upset and said I should have told him that I was spending time with someone else. He also accused me of possibly having something going on with this guy.
I told him that he was literally asleep at the time and I didn’t think I needed to text him something like "Hey, I’m playing one game with a friend, hope you don’t mind.” I genuinely didn’t see it as something worth mentioning.
This turned into a huge argument and eventually we compromised that I would remove this friend and only play with my female friends. I thought that would be the end of it, but it was actually just the beginning.
After that my boyfriend seemed to completely lose trust in me. He started checking my games and match history to make sure I wasn’t playing with other guys. He would check whether I was online and what I was doing.
My last straw was a few days ago. I was playing another game that I normally play solo and he asked me to video call him so I could prove that I was actually playing alone. I did, but then he noticed that I was online on Discord and assumed I must have been on a call with another guy and possibly streaming my game to him.
None of that was true.
I’ve told him that I’m willing to give him whatever proof he needs, even my social media passwords, but he says that it doesn’t prove anything because I could always delete things.
At this point, I honestly don’t know how to handle this. I understand that the first situation may have made him uncomfortable and maybe I could have communicated better, but I don’t think I did anything wrong by playing one game with an old friend while he was asleep.
What worries me is how much this has escalated since then. I feel like I’m constantly being watched and expected to prove that I’m not doing something wrong.
I never did anything serious to break his trust, so I’m really hurt and confused about whether his behavior is normal or if this is something I should be more concerned about.
Maybe I’m too close to the situation to see it clearly so I’d really appreciate some outside perspectives.
