When I started studying at Harvard, I quickly realized that being a good student isn't really about studying for 10 hours a day or being naturally intelligent. The workload can be demanding, so I had to change the way I studied and learned how to manage my time better.

One of the biggest things that helped me was treating my time like a limited budget. There are only 168 hours in a week, and I can't spend all of them studying. I have classes, assignments, meals, sleep, exercise, and time to rest. Instead of studying whenever I "feel like it," I schedule my study sessions ahead of time.

I usually study during the hours when I know I can focus best. For me, that's often in the evening, around 7–10 PM. For difficult subjects or long assignments, I use 50 minutes of focused work followed by a 10-minute break. For lighter review sessions, I sometimes use shorter intervals. The goal isn't to study continuously—it's to make the time I have actually productive.

Another thing that changed my studying is learning in layers. I don't expect myself to understand an entire topic after reading it once.

Before class, I skim the assigned reading so I have an idea of what we're going to discuss. During class, I focus on understanding the concepts instead of trying to write down every single word. After class, I work on assignments and practice problems. Then, during my review sessions, I use retrieval practice—I close my notes and try to explain the topic from memory.

This is much more effective for me than repeatedly reading the same notes.

I also learned to stop telling myself, "I'm bad at this." Instead, I tell myself, "I don't understand this yet." That small change makes it easier to keep working when a subject becomes difficult. Not understanding something immediately doesn't mean you're incapable of learning it.

I also started studying with other students. Sometimes, we take turns explaining a topic to each other without looking at our notes. If I can't explain something clearly, that's usually a sign that I don't understand it as well as I thought I did. Teaching someone else has become one of my favorite ways to review.

But probably one of the most important lessons I've learned is that studying longer doesn't always mean studying better.

I don't try to spend my entire day studying. A focused 2–3 hour study session can be more productive than sitting at my desk for six hours while constantly checking my phone or getting distracted.

And I learned not to sacrifice sleep just to finish one more chapter.

Harvard can be academically demanding, but I realized that surviving university isn't about constantly pushing yourself until you're exhausted. It's about having a system that you can actually maintain.

Plan your time. Study actively. Review consistently. Ask for help. Get enough sleep. And don't wait until the night before an exam to start learning.

You don't have to study 12 hours a day to become a great student.

You just need to make the hours you have count.
