Final year BCS student confused about career after AI boom β what should I do?
I'm currently in my final year of BCS (Bachelor of Computer Science) in India, and honestly I'm pretty lost about what to do after graduation.
With how fast AI models are improving, especially with the recent GPT-6 Astra launch, I'm getting really anxious about choosing a career in software development. It feels like a lot of the work that fresh CS graduates used to do can increasingly be automated.
I'm not saying "AI will destroy every CS job", but I genuinely don't know what the smart move is anymore.
I've been thinking about doing an M.Tech after BCS, and I'm particularly interested in something that combines software + hardware, rather than doing a generic software/IT degree.
Embedded Systems caught my attention. From what I've read, it could lead to areas like:
- Embedded software / firmware
- Embedded Linux
- Robotics
- Automotive systems
- IoT
- Edge AI
- Hardware-software integration
But I don't have an electronics background like an ECE student, so I'm not sure whether this is actually a realistic path after BCS.
I'm basically looking for advice from people who are already working in these fields or have gone through a similar transition.
A few questions:
- Is M.Tech in Embedded Systems a good choice after BCS?
- Are BCS graduates actually eligible/competitive for good Embedded Systems M.Tech programs in India?
- What kind of jobs can I realistically get after an M.Tech in Embedded Systems?
- Is embedded/firmware/robotics actually more future-proof than generic software development, or am I just trying to escape AI?
- If you were in my position (final-year BCS student in 2026), what would you do?
- Are there any other degrees/career paths combining software + hardware that I should consider?
I'm honestly pretty stressed about this and would really appreciate real experiences rather than generic "just learn AI bro" advice.
If you work in embedded, firmware, robotics, semiconductor, automotive, or any software+hardware field, I'd especially love to hear how you got there and what you'd recommend to someone starting from BCS.
Thanks π
