I thought my boyfriend and I were finally going to live together. He says he’s not ready — and I’m devastated.
I’m 18, my boyfriend is 20. We’ve been together for almost 9 months. I thought we were finally going to move in together, and now I don’t even want to see him. Am I overreacting?
My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 9 months. I love him very much, and I’ve wanted us to live together for a long time.
He currently lives with his family, but he’s planning to move out in October. And honestly, for months I’ve been living in my head with this plan: he moves out → I move in with him → we finally live together.
I had genuinely already started thinking about what I would leave at home, what I would take with me, what things I would need, etc. I was so excited about it that now I’m almost embarrassed to think about how certain I was that this was going to happen.
And then I found out that he never actually planned to take me with him.
He says he’s not ready to live together. He’s not ready for marriage either. He says he’s scared.
And I’m like: WHAT THE HELL IS THERE TO SE SCARED OF!?
He explained that some mutual friends of ours started living together and then broke up after about six months. And now he’s afraid the same thing could happen to us.
I just don’t understand the logic. Yes, people can start living together and then break up. But they could break up without living together too. Meanwhile, other people we know have been living together for 2–3 years and they’re doing perfectly fine.
He says I’ll still have a key to his apartment, that I can come whenever I want and stay for as long as I want.
BUT I DONT WANT THAT.
I don’t want a key to an apartment where I don’t actually live. I don’t want to come there as some person who is “allowed” to stay whenever she wants. In my head, it was supposed to be our home, not his apartment where I’m allowed to stay.
And honestly, that’s not even what hurts the most.
I really wanted to move out of my family home. I genuinely saw his move as an opportunity to finally get away from home, start living independently, and be close to the person I love.
So I had already planned everything in my head.
And now it turns out I’ve been excited for months about a plan that didn’t even exist.
I’m even embarrassed about it. Like, I was sitting there being happy, thinking about what I would take from home, while he wasn’t even ready for any of this.
Right now I’m so angry at him that I don’t even want to see him.
He texted me saying he was already home. I pretended I had gone to sleep because I didn’t want to say anything to him. I just sat there and cried.
And now I’ve started having stupid thoughts like, „maybe he dont love like me”
Because otherwise, I don’t understand where our relationship is even going.
I want to live together. I want to build a life together. He says he loves me, but at the same time he’s too scared to even try living with me.
I know I’m really angry right now and maybe I shouldn’t make any decisions while I’m this emotional. But this genuinely hurts so fucking much.
I don’t know if I’m being an idiot for expecting us to live together after 9 months, or if it’s completely normal for me to feel this disappointed.
What would you do in my situation?
TL;DR: My boyfriend of almost 9 months is moving out in October, and I thought I would move in with him. He says he’s not ready to live together because he’s afraid we might end up like our friends who broke up after moving in together. I’m hurt because I had already planned everything around us living together and I don’t know if I’m expecting too much.
