I got tired of Chrome's native bookmark manager choking past 1,000 items, so I built BookmarkPro to see if local-first + aggressive indexing could make large collections actually usable.

\*\*The technical approach:\*\*

\- \`chrome.bookmarks.getTree()\` returns a deeply nested tree. For 5k+ bookmarks, traversing that on every search is painful. I flatten it into an indexed array on popup open and keep a path map for folder breadcrumbs.

\- Search is debounced at 150ms with regex support (\`\^https?://github\\.com\`, exact match, starts/ends with). On 8k bookmarks it averages \~47ms per query.

\- All CRUD goes through the native \`chrome.bookmarks\` API — no backend, no sync, no external network calls. Everything stays in the browser.

\- Manifest V3, vanilla JS, no frameworks. The popup renders 50 items at a time via pagination to keep DOM weight low.

\*\*For users:\*\*

\- Regex + multi-mode search across titles and URLs

\- Batch delete / edit / move (select 50+, one action)

\- Export to CSV, JSON, TXT, Markdown

\- Free tier: up to 100 bookmarks

\- Pro: unlimited + batch + export + shortcuts ($3.99/mo, $29/yr, $39 lifetime)

\*\*What I'm trying to validate:\*\*

I built this because *I* had 5k bookmarks and Chrome's manager was unusable. But I'm not sure if "local-first bookmark power-user tool" is a real market, or if most people are fine with Raindrop / native / nothing.

If you have a large bookmark collection: what makes you pay for a tool vs. tolerating the native manager? And if you build extensions: have you found a better way to handle `getTree()` performance at scale?

Genuinely curious if this is a problem worth solving or if I'm just scratching my own itch — would love to hear your take.

Built a Chrome extension that flattens the bookmarks API tree for instant regex search — does anyone else need this?
