[MOBILE][ANDROID][2010s] 2D pixel-art action RPG similar to Swordigo, starts with childhood flashback, Orc prison/arena, desert mage, immortal villain, bizarre ending
I'm trying to find an Android game I played sometime around 2015-2017. I'm fairly sure it was free and may have since been removed from the Google Play Store.
I originally found it through a list/article of games similar to Swordigo.
It was a 2D side-scrolling pixel-art action RPG/platformer, with the camera following the player like Swordigo. The pixel art was fairly detailed/HD rather than chunky old-school sprites.
Opening
The game starts with the protagonist as a child, playing/training with his childhood friend. This section acts as a tutorial where they teach you the basic controls.
There's then a time skip and the protagonist is grown up. He's trained in swordsmanship and is equipped with a pretty basic sword and simple clothes. I remember him having brown hair and looking like a fairly generic fantasy swordsman.
He goes to a mage's tower because he needs to obtain something related to medicine for his mother.
At some point around this part, the protagonist's village is attacked.
He returns home and finds the village destroyed. He sees the main villain kill his father and leave.
The protagonist chases after him.
First boss / cliff
While pursuing the villain, the protagonist fights his minions and eventually encounters the first major boss, who I remember being an extremely skilled dual weilding swordsman with dash attacks.
The protagonist eventually encounters the main villain himself.
The villain completely destroys him in basically one hit.
The protagonist falls off a cliff.
I don't remember exactly how he survives, but eventually he's told that he needs to find a mage somewhere in a desert.
Orc section
While travelling to find this mage, the protagonist is captured by Orcs.
His equipment is taken away and he's put into a prison cell with another Orc who's been chained up and constantly bleeding. Said orc tries to convince the protagnist that his actions are a fool's earrend.
He eventually escapes, finds/retrieves his equipment, and fights his way through an arena.
The arena champion turns out to be the same Orc who was his cellmate.
This becomes the second major boss fight. Orc's weapons are similar to Kratos's Blades of Chaos from GoW.
The protagonist defeats and decapitates the Orc.
Desert mage
After leaving the Orc area, the protagonist eventually finds the mage in the desert.
The mage refuses to help him, resulting in another boss fight. Attacks were quite similar to some bullethell type games.
After defeating the mage, the protagonist obtains an amulet that becomes important to the story.
I'm not completely sure whether he obtains the amulet here or had it earlier, so this part may be slightly wrong.
Final act
The protagonist eventually infiltrates the main villain's headquarters, which is actually the kingdom's castle that the villain had previously raided/conquered.
There were apparently two ways to get through the castle:
- Sneak your way through
- Fight your way through
The stealth route had sections where guards/people would question you, and giving the wrong answer would cause a fight.
Eventually you reach the main villain.
The villain looked somewhat like Vergil from Devil May Cry in terms of appearance and fighting style. I don't remember his exact appearance, unfortunately, but he was a very skilled swordsman and had that calm/overpowered swordsman vibe.
There's a final boss fight that ends with a cutscene when final blow is landed. The fight villain's moveset includes a LOT of horizontal and vertical dashes.
The protagonist manages to stab the villain through the heart, but the villain survives because he is apparently immortal now.
The villain then cuts off the protagonist's hand and throws him off another cliff.
Ending
The protagonist is washed up on a shore.
His childhood friend from the opening eventually finds him.
The amulet activates, but instead of simply healing him, it apparently drains the life from his friend and uses it to restore/revive him.
The protagonist comes back in a kind of zombie-like/reanimated state.
And that's where the game ends.
Other details I remember
- Android
- Unsure if it was Free or paid but most likely Free game
- Played around 2015-2017, definitely before 2018
- 2D side-scroller
- Detailed pixel art
- Camera follows the protagonist closely, similar to Swordigo
- Action RPG
- Sword-based combat
- Blocking/parrying was part of combat
- RPG elements/progression
- Male protagonist
- Brown hair
- Basic iron-looking sword
- Simple starting clothes
- Had boss fights
- Had dialogue
- Had some sort of branching stealth/combat approach in the final castle
- I think it was relatively obscure even when I played it
I've already tried searching for it using Swordigo-like games, but haven't been able to identify it.
The Orc prison → Orc cellmate → arena champion → desert mage → castle infiltration → immortal villain → hand chopped off → childhood friend sacrifices herself to revive MC sequence is the part I'm most confident about.
If anyone recognizes this, please let me know. Even if you aren't 100% sure, please throw out the title because I can check screenshots/gameplay myself.
Also, if you know of an old database/archive that might contain delisted Android games, I'd appreciate that too!
