My current employer is making a counteroffer after I accepted another job. What would you do?
I recently accepted a fully remote position with an 11% higher base salary and bonuses that could increase first-year compensation by roughly 44%. I’ve signed the offer letter and am scheduled to start next Wednesday. Though the offer does say “at will” and acknowledges the fact that either I or the hiring company can terminate it at any point.
After giving notice, my current employer asked what they could do to keep me. I told them that remote work is a major selling point for me. They said they could accommodate that, with the occasional in-person meeting—approximately once a month. Compensation is also important to me. They emphasized that a counter offer could be made and given to me in a day or two.
I enjoy my current role and the people I work with, so I’m open to considering the offer.
For those who have accepted or declined a counteroffer, how did it work out long-term? What factors would you consider?
