As the third son, Stefan had always known he was not destined to inherit. Equally, he was still an important asset to the kingdom; mostly likely with a future in the army, or a dukedom somewhere when the time came.

So he had been more than a little shocked to be summoned by his father the king, and his council of advisors, to be informed that he was to be married off instead. Of course he understood the political realities; their neighbours to the north were both powerful and prosperous, and when the emissary had arrived requesting a son to be married to the Crown Princess to cement the alliance between their nations, it was a proposal they simply couldn't refuse. So that was that; without any kind of consultation he had simply been traded away for the kingdom's future.

He knew but little of his future home; except that the Queendom of Averia was just that: a matriarchal society ruled over by a Queen, whose daughter he was now promised to wed. The country itself was cold, often locked in snow, and their fur-clad warriors had a most fearsome reputation. The ambassador had warned him he would find their customs strange compared to what he was used to in his father's kingdom; she had not elaborated further, but plenty of wild rumours had reached his ears about what life in the north might be like.

And now next week the caravan was due to arrive for him. The Queen had sent a well-guarded wagon train and carriage to pick up her daughter's betrothed and convey him in safety back to her capital, including a Knight Champion who would be responsible for him, and some of her own personal staff to help prepare him and educate him as to what be would expected, so as to ease the shock of adjusting to a new society.

Stefan, for his part, read every work he could find on Averia, wondering just what sort of life awaited him.
