help with knitting math!
So there’s a pattern I’ve been dying to knit since I saw it on tiktok (it’s the Vendela sweater by Mathiliestrikk if anyone is familiar). The pattern is currently still being tested, but since my dad is taking a trip to India soon (where yarn is very good quality and also very cheap) I want to ask him to bring back some yarn for me. I contacted the designer directly and she was kind enough to let me know that the pattern is knit with 3 strands held together — 1 strand of Tynn silk mohair and 2 strands of Tynn Merino (fingering). The approximate amounts required of these yarns varies with the 2 sizes S and (M) with the mohair being approximately 175 (225) grams and the fingering being 700 (800) grams. The gauge is 16 sts across and 26 rows high per 10 cm.
So, onto my question — there’s this beautiful yarn that I’ve found from an Indian brand. It’s an 80/20 mix of merino and cashmere and listed on the website as light (DK) in yarn weight. However, its gauge is 22 sts across and 30 rows high using 4mm needles. How can I adjust the gauge of this yarn to achieve somewhat close to the targeted gauge? I say somewhat close because my bust is 36 inches, so I suspect the medium size would still be pretty small, and the sweater looks especially beautiful sized up, so I would want to make one that’s even bigger than that. Could I possibly achieve this using smaller needles? Or would I need larger needles to size up? I would really appreciate any help on this!!
