[Spoilers] Reason(s) why the ending has a definative ending

Ray dies at the end.

1. Ray establishes he is incapable of taking on 2 men at once (when he kicked the one guy in front of Ally. He explained to her the odds were insurmountable, which is why he had to take out one quickly.

2. In the same episode, during a 2 vs 3 scenario, Ray barely got out alive.

3. These two men are hardened criminals out to get him, not 1 junkie with a temper and 1 junkie who was technically not involved in the conflict

Ray's smile at the end and nod to the audience was him going out, knowing he had no chance and was about to get killed. His only option would be to Run, but there was no way he could escape his ultimate fate.
