What would you do??? Club Championship
Didn’t really know who else to ask/talk to but I had some questions after our Club Championship from this past weekend. 3 day tournament, 50 some off golfers, all ranges of skill, but our biggest tournament of the year.
First, I am WELL aware that this is LOW stakes, and really not a huge deal however...
On Sat, I played with "J", who came in 2nd place (Gross) in the tournament. He was being kind when I thought I lost my range finder and was giving me the distances he shot from the tee, or even driving to my ball and giving me distance. SUPER kind, and I didn’t ask him to do that at all. But he was giving me distance and slope,,, When he asked if I preferred distances with slope I told him I believed slope wasn’t allowed in this tournament. He was adamant that it was.
I know slope wasn’t allowed, I had the rules that were sent out in the pre-tournament email on my phone. It clearly states that range finders are allowed but with Slope specifically disabled.
There is no reason to bring it up at this point, but curious what you would have done in the same situation.
The second situation came up Sunday. I was playing with that young kid "A" (who played on the HS team). We were on hole 8. He landed on the front side of the green. His first put was short. 2nd put went long. 3rd put went long again, 4th putt once again went long, and then he finally got it in the hole on his 5th putt. (Bad putting day for him for sure).
As we were walking off, I called out my score to the other player and Alex said he got a 5. I called him on it. “You sure that was a 5? I’m pretty sure it was 6 with 5 putts”.
He was adamant that it was a 5, and that was that. It was a tough hole and I certainly wasn't going to kill his entire round by digging in. I talked with our other playing partner about it while walking to our balls on 10, he agreed 6 was probably right, but then that was it. No action taken.
Again, LOW Stakes, but especially in tournament play this kind of stuff matters to me, and should to them.
What would you do differently?
Most would simply say “If you want PGA rule following, go play on tour” but this is the closest we normals really get, and I do care about that kind of stuff, just not enough to make a deal of it.
