Did I accidentally racially profile a girl at work?
I’m a 39M (white) and I’m married to a Taiwanese woman. I live and work in a very white area.
The other day at work there was a cohort of new starters who all looked like new graduates. One of the girls was Asian and I heard someone call her a name that sounded like it could be Taiwanese.
I’m always enthusiastic to meet people who share a background with my wife as it’s very rare where I live. So when she didn’t look busy I introduced myself and made small talk for a good five minutes before I asked her name, followed by if she has family in Taiwan ( she did). I then explained that I asked because my wife is also Taiwanese.
Up to that point she was very engaging and seemed happy to talk to me but as soon as I bought this up she seemed annoyed, and clearly didn’t want to continue the conversation. It was very awkward and I felt mortified that I might have made her uncomfortable.
At the same time, I didn’t think my question was outrageous or downright inappropriate. Do I have a blind spot here?
