Comparing Two Golgari "Sacrifice Big Things" Commanders
Greetings,
I'm interested in a commander themed on sacrificing big stuff for value. Has anyone had the chance to check out both [[Tom, Bert, and William]] and [[The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride]] ?
I've theorycrafted a bit but haven't had a chance to build either.
Some initial thoughts:
Tom, Bert, and William
Pros:
- [[Greater Good]] like effect in the command zone
- Survives the first creature removal spell and comes back as a harder to destroy artifact
- Sac works at instant speed, so big creatures can block for a turn cycle until they're not needed
Cons:
- Costs mana to activate
- Doesn't accelerate lands, short of discard effects like [[Skirge Familiar]]
The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride
Pros:
- Accelerates lands and card draw
- Hasty
- No mana cost for the sacrifice
Cons:
- More telegraphed, the saddled creature needs to survive through combat damage step
- Centered on a combat damage trigger, you might not always be able to get through
I like the idea of Gitrog, especially the land acceleration but I'm concerned that it'll be a bit of highly-telegraphed a glass cannon. And also that it might feel a bit the same from game to game. It also seems like it would draw a lot of attention to the table.
With Tom, Bert, and William I like their persistence and their ability to serve as a value engine without even needing to attack. I'm not as clear on how it wins, short of drawing a lot and casting more creatures via a Skirge Familiar effect to repeat.
If anyone has live experience with either or both of these, I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts (and deck lists!).
