Question about pot size equivalents?

I know I need to upsize 1-2 inches when I repot, but is a 4"pot that is deeper than my current 4" pot the same as going up to a 5"/6" pot? By being deeper I would use more soil mix and the roots could go down instead of out. Or is the point of a bigger pot to let the roots spread out?
