Iquitos Peru Temple

The Iquitos Peru Temple, located at Calle San Marcos 117-137, San Juan Bautista, Maynas, Loreto, Peru, is set to serve as a significant addition to the spiritual landscape for members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the region.

On April 2, 2023, during the General Conference, the Prophet Russell M. Nelson announced the plans for the Iquitos Peru Temple. The groundbreaking and dedication of the House of the Lord took place on August 10, 2026 last month, with Elder Sandino Roman of the South America Northwest Area Presidency presiding over the ceremony. This event marks an important milestone in the fulfillment of the vision for this sacred space.

The Iquitos Peru Temple will be constructed on 1.75 acres and will feature an exterior finish made of granite. The House of the Lord will encompass 20,000 square feet and will consist of a single attached end spire. Notably, a Gold-leafed Angel Moroni statue will not grace the top. Inside, the House of the Lord will include two instruction rooms, two sealing rooms, and one baptistry, designed to meet the needs of the members in the area.

Situated at an elevation of 317 feet, the Iquitos Peru Temple is located in one of the most populous cities in Peru, positioned along the Amazon River in Northeast Peru. Iquitos is notable as the world's largest city without ground access, making it uniquely reachable only by air or the nearby river.

This House of the Lord will be the tenth temple built in Peru, contributing to a growing number of sacred House of the Lord in the country. At the time of the announcement, there were several other temples announced, under construction, or dedicated, including the Arequipa Peru Temple, Chiclayo Peru Temple, Cusco Peru Temple, Lima Peru Temple, Lima Peru Los Olivos Temple, and Trujillo Peru Temple. The closest temple to Iquitos is the Guayaquil Ecuador Temple, located approximately 470 miles away. Currently, Saints in Iquitos travel by plane to access this temple due to the dense foliage of the Amazon Rainforest. \~ Written by Chad James
