After painstakingly completing the required missions and bribes, I have successfully steered the politics of the system where I've been building my first large base (next to a settlement that I manage).

I am now the Station's Director, one of the first of many cosmic overlords, and my rule shall be glorious.

First thing that I noticed was that nothing in the station immediately changed but I could now pull up the base building menu and actually put stuff down (including walls and floors), in case anyone is curious but hasn't started their station claiming. The base building menu won't let me build in the corvette parking/building area though, but considering what the space is needed for, that might be for the best.

For the Salvage missions, one needs to pull up their star system map (next to the galaxy menu) and mark the deep space outpost on it (it's in space and in the same star system, in case anyone is confused about where they are) then go fly to the outpost (prepare for ludicrous speed!). There is an overseer there who will give you your first salvage map. Save some contaminated metal during your salvage runs for convenience in buying more maps. The yellow interface near the parking area will have salvage missions available, much like a corvette computer.

Remember to TAKE A CORVETTE AND A GRAVITINO COIL ON THE SALVAGE MISSIONS; there are salvage objects you'll need to physically move to your corvette for transport back to the outpost, where there is a garbage disposal like machine in which you toss the salvaged objects in return for the mission items you need to complete salvage missions.
