I recently tested OpenFCC with my DJI Lito X1 and DJI RC 2, including the DJI Cellular Dongle, and wanted to share my experience so far.

DISCLOSURE

I tested OpenFCC using a trial license as part of their tester program. After completing the test and publishing an honest review, I am eligible to receive a 90% discount coupon. Nobody told me what to write, and everything below is based on my own testing.

INSTALLATION

I followed the official OpenFCC manual and transferred the required files/helper apps to my RC 2 using a microSD card.

The installation was surprisingly straightforward. After completing the steps, OpenFCC showed that FCC mode was enabled.

FCC PERFORMANCE

My first impression of the FCC connection was very positive.

With a good connection, the video feed was smooth and stable, and DJI Fly behaved basically exactly like normal. I didn't notice any strange pop-ups, instability or other issues caused by OpenFCC during normal use.

The radio connection also felt noticeably stronger in my testing.

DJI CELLULAR DONGLE / ENHANCED TRANSMISSION

This was actually the part I was most interested in.

I installed the DJI Cellular Dongle on the aircraft and enabled Enhanced Transmission in DJI Fly.

The switch was ON and DJI Fly displayed the cellular signal status.

However, DJI Fly simultaneously displayed a message saying that Enhanced Transmission is not available for this aircraft in this region.

So initially I assumed 4G might not actually work.

BUT IT DID.

RC CONNECTION COMPLETELY LOST – 4G KEPT THE CONNECTION ALIVE

For my second test, I connected the RC 2 to my phone's hotspot using mobile data.

During the flight, the normal RC connection became progressively weaker. Eventually, the RC signal disappeared completely and was shown as disconnected/crossed out.

At that point I still had a live video feed through the cellular connection.

More importantly, I could still control and fly the aircraft through the 4G connection even though the direct RC connection was completely disconnected.

I was able to reproduce this more than once.

So in my testing:

RC connection: completely gone ❌

4G connection: still available ✅

Live view: still working ✅

Aircraft control via 4G: still working ✅

IMPORTANT NOTE ABOUT THE RTH SCREENSHOTS

In some of my screenshots, Return to Home (RTH) is active while the RC connection is shown as disconnected and the 4G connection is still available.

I want to make this very clear because the screenshots could otherwise be misleading:

RTH was NOT automatically triggered by the loss of the direct RC connection.

I manually activated Return to Home myself during the test.

4G was not simply being used to allow the aircraft to return home automatically. I could cancel RTH and continue flying and controlling the aircraft through the 4G connection while the direct RC connection remained disconnected.

This was one of the most interesting results of the entire test for me.

WHAT WAS THE 4G VIDEO QUALITY LIKE?

With a good cellular connection, everything worked very well.

When the cellular signal became weak, the live view became noticeably softer and occasionally stuttered. However, even with a weak 4G signal, I was still receiving a usable picture after the normal RC connection had completely disappeared.

Obviously, cellular performance will depend heavily on local network coverage.

I wouldn't describe a weak 4G connection as being equivalent to a strong direct RC connection, but as an additional connection it worked much better than I expected.

ONE CONFUSING ISSUE

The biggest confusing point for me is the region warning.

DJI Fly says Enhanced Transmission isn't available for this aircraft in my region, while the Enhanced Transmission switch is enabled and my real-world test clearly showed the cellular connection maintaining both the live feed and aircraft control after the direct RC connection was gone.

I'd be interested to know whether anyone else has observed the same behavior.

EU / C0 WARNING

DJI Fly also displayed a warning regarding EU/C0 compliance when the Cellular Dongle was installed.

This is something EU users should be aware of. OpenFCC also states that users are responsible for complying with their local RF and aviation regulations.

CONCLUSION

So far, I'm very happy with how OpenFCC performed on my setup.

The FCC mode worked as expected in my testing, the normal radio connection felt very strong, and the most surprising result was that Enhanced Transmission through the Cellular Dongle actually worked despite the region warning.

The moment that convinced me was seeing the direct RC connection completely disappear while the aircraft continued providing a live feed and remained controllable through 4G.

To clarify the screenshots again: the RTH shown there was activated manually by me. It was not automatically triggered by the RC connection loss. RTH could be cancelled and I could continue flying through 4G while the direct RC connection was still disconnected.

Weak cellular reception did result in reduced image quality and some stuttering, so I definitely wouldn't treat 4G as magic or as a replacement for a good direct RC connection. But as an additional connection when the direct RC link is unavailable, I found it genuinely useful.

TEST SETUP

• DJI Lito X1
• DJI RC 2
• OpenFCC Trial / FCC mode enabled
• DJI Cellular Dongle
• Enhanced Transmission enabled
• RC 2 connected to smartphone hotspot/mobile data

I'll do some more testing, but these are my results so far. I'm especially interested in hearing from anyone who has tested the Cellular Dongle/Enhanced Transmission in an officially unsupported region.
