Why do managers care more about working hours than the actual work?

I’ve never understood managers who barely notice when you stay late but somehow notice immediately if you come in 10 minutes late.

Same thing with timesheets. Work an extra hour? Nothing. Miss a clock-in or take a slightly longer break? Suddenly attendance is a big conversation.

I get that companies need accurate working hours for overtime and payroll. That part makes sense.

But at what point does time tracking stop being about accurate pay and start becoming micromanagement?

Anyone else work somewhere like this?
