Love the idea of furniture-integrated speakers. How to do it right?

I wonder whether anyone has built a setup like this here, and whether it's feasible to DIY, assuming I'll never find an expert in my area to do something professional-grade for me.

Also, assuming this won't be cheap anyway, do I loose too much in quality considering I probably won't be using optimal wood material and dimensions?
