Thoughts on the proposed "Tourist Tax"?

Discussion

Every year we get about 4-5 million overnight visitors, with folks on holiday staying an average of 6 nights. Or so says the internet, but let's take that as a rough estimate.

If the tourist tax was £1 per person per night that's maybe £24-30 mil per year for the county. Would add £24 to the cost of accommodation for a family of 4 for 6 nights. For cheaper camping options that would add a chunk I guess.

Tourists use our infrastructure and services so in theory I'm not against it. We could fix a few of our lovely potholes with that money after all ;)

But there's the perspective of the hospitality industry, as whilst £1 per person per night would roughly equate to a pasty lunch with a can of pop for each of the family, up to 5% (one of the numbers that's being bandied about) might make more, difference depending on the accommodation type (e.g at 5%, tent camping might come out as less that £1 per night per person, luxury holiday home a lot more).

A fair tourist tax wouldn't and hasn't bothered me when booking a holiday. Interested though to hear what everyone thinks.
