AITAH for being upset over the fact my friends boyfriend is driving without a license?
My friend Sally (16F) usually lets me (17F) ride home from school with her and her mom. When they can’t, I ask my other friend Anna (17F), who has her license, if she can drive me home.
Today, neither Sally’s mom nor Anna could drive us. Sally said her boyfriend Adam (17M) could drive us because he had his car at school. I was grateful and offered to buy him something or give him gas money, but he said it was no trouble since Sally and I live near each other.
Later, Anna mentioned that I should be careful about getting in the car with Adam. I was confused because I thought he had his license and had been driving for a while. Apparently, he only has his learner’s permit and has already failed one driving test.
I was upset that this wasn’t disclosed to me beforehand. I have a class with Sally, so I brought it up and said, “If I would’ve known that we were driving illegally I would have said no, oh my goodness.” I realize that sounds intense, but Sally and I have a very jokey love-hate dynamic and say things to each other like “I love my fat hoe,” “stop making me laugh so much, go die,” or “so I see we stopped putting effort into ourselves after the first day of school.” So I genuinely meant it in our usual joking tone.
However, Sally got upset and said, “He does it all the time, it’s not even a big deal.” Another girl in our class, who also needed a ride from Adam, overheard and asked, “How did you find out?” This made me wonder if they intentionally didn’t tell me, although I could be overthinking that.
The same girl asked Sally how Adam’s parents were okay with him driving illegally. Sally got upset again, saying, “Sometimes people don’t have a choice on how they get to and from school, not everyone has money for the bus.” I completely understand that point, but personally, I don’t think risking driving without a license is worth it.
This is where I think I went too far. I said, “This is insane. I’m sorry, but it’s genuinely stupid to be driving around illegally. I can’t go in his car, and I really don’t think you should either. I can get an Uber for you if you want, but I think it’s stupid to go with him.”
The atmosphere was tense afterward, which is really upsetting because Sally means the world to me. In the end, Sally and the other girl went with Adam, while I took an Uber home, and everyone got home safely.
Now I’m home and questioning whether I was being dramatic. I know I’m an anxious person and tend to worry when people I love are at risk, and I’ve already reflected on how strongly I reacted. At the same time, I feel like I should have been told beforehand that the ride would involve someone driving without a full license.
Was I overreacting, or was my concern reasonable? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you for reading!
