Gauging Interest in Who Would be Interested in Private Composition/Theory/ Lessons
Hello!
As the title says, this post is to gauge the interest of people who would be interested in private composition/theory lessons with me, and to also see how viable it would be for me to make a living out of private teaching. A little bit about me, I am an NYC-based, mostly self-taught composer with a BA in Management of Musical Enterprises, currently in the middle of applying to graduate programs in composition. In my Junior Year of college (2024-2025) I received two awards from my school to study abroad in the Philippines, where I spent my time learning about and immersing myself in the indigenous musical cultures of the Philippines and Asia in general. I've had pieces performed both in the US as well as in the Philippines. I am also an intermediate-level guitarist and pianist, and have served in my local church choir since I was 7, and am currently studying to become an organist at that same church.
I begun teaching composition and music theory privately in February of this year. I structure my lessons to the indivdual student, and their artistic goals. After a free 15-30 minute consult where I get to know prospective students, their musical influences, etc., I build a curriculum to bring the student where they need to be, almost like a college lecture class catering to your specific musical interests.
Classes can be 1-2 hours, per session, and 1-2 sessions per week, depending on the student. I charge 35USD/hr, with payments made by students every week. Class sessions include lectures on music theory concepts, composition exercises, analyzing pieces from the repertoire, and reviewing student compositions.
Aside from individual classes, I am also considering doing once-a-month group lectures/classes on everything in music, from workshops on setting poetry to music, lectures on the life and works of various composers, along with more niche topics like surveys on indigenous Asian music traditions. The tentative price for these once-a-month group classes would be $20, with current students of mine being able to attend for free, should they wish.
Please let me know if any of this sounds interesting to you! If you are a more senior composer with advice for me on how to go about private teaching, if you are interested in becoming a prospective student, or if you just have thoughts in general about any of these things, please let me know! I am eager to hear your thoughts.
