UTOPIA!

Utopia! Long ago the world believed in you!

Utopia! They said it was the age of gold!

Utopia! I wonder if it really could be true?

But I know one thing for certain,

If someone would pull back the curtain,

I’d like to step with you into a new milieu!

Utopia! Is it just an impossible dream?

Utopia! Or has my wishful mind run wild?

Utopia! Can it somehow be a reality?

Hey, I want to fly way up to the heavens,

Away from all this confusion,

To fulfill my Utopian destiny!

\[Thomas More's Utopia was written in Latin towards the close of 1515\]

In their study of Nature's secrets, they not only find wonderful pleasure for themselves, but they believe that they please the author and maker of Nature. For they think that in the manner of other artificers, He has exposed this machine of the universe to man’s view because man alone is able to contemplate it, and that therefore a careful observer and eager admirer of his workmanship is dearer to him than a dull and unmoved being who looks upon this great spectacle like an animal incapable of thought. And in Utopia everyone is skillful in the law. For the laws are very few, as I have said, and the plainest interpretation is the fairest. All laws, according to their view, are promulgated for the single purpose of teaching each man his duty. Subtle interpretations teach very few, for there are few who can understand them; the simpler and more obvious sense of the laws is clear to all. If laws are not clear, they are useless for the masses of people who need their guidance most. There might as well be no laws at all as to have laws which only men of great ability and long training can interpret. Most men lack the brains for this task and cannot spare the time from their work.
