"flock cameras not even penetrating the Los Angeles conversation in preparation for LA28 Olympics ..is Flock a diversion or a product tie-in casualty" Query source: Google

The Los Angeles conversation around public safety has moved away from Flock Safety cameras because the Los Angeles Police Department officially suspended its relationship with the company. In July 2026, the LAPD allowed its three-year contract with Flock Safety to expire and paused its use of the automated license plate reader (ALPR) network. L.A. Mayor Karen Bass publicly stated that the company had "lost the trust of Angelenos" over data-sharing practices and civil liberty violations.

As the city prepares for the LA28 Olympics, Flock is increasingly viewed by local leadership and privacy advocates not as a central security solution, but as a compliance nightmare and a distraction from core preparation challenges.

Why the LA28 Security Focus Has Shifted

Rather than relying on automated private surveillance networks, the actual security conversation for the 2028 Olympic Games centers on much larger federal and logistical factors:

Massive Staffing Demands: The primary operational focus for newly appointed LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell is a severe manpower shortage. The department is aggressively trying to figure out how to add 3,300 more officers to carry the load of a global event.

Federal Takeover of Security: Because the 2028 Olympics is designated a National Special Security Event, the U.S. Secret Service—not local tech vendors—is leading security operations. The White House even established a dedicated federal task force to centralize control over emergency responses, counterterrorism, and transit infrastructure.

The "Flock Backlash": Rather than ramping up for the Olympics, L.A. joined a nationwide wave of over 200 communities—including Seattle, Austin, and neighboring California cities like Mountain View—that have actively canceled or blocked Flock Safety deployments due to data leaks, a lack of transparency, and reports of data access by federal agencies like ICE. A July 2026 LAPD audit also dealt a heavy blow to the tech's reliability, revealing that one out of three vehicles flagged as "stolen" by the cameras was an inaccurate match.

The overarching consensus among L.A. officials is that mass surveillance tech cannot substitute for actual feet on the street, and relying on it creates more legal liabilities than it solves ahead of the Games.
