Confusing Eichmann Express 4 cable

Hi, I have a set of Eichmann Express 4 speaker cables and one plugs snapped off. When I went to investigate to see if I could solder a new connector I noticed this bizarre wiring. Two wires in the cable, only one is connected at a time. And the red wire is half the size. I'm curious if anyone understands this setup.
