The most iconic word in crypto was a drunk typo. His girlfriend was at a lesbian bar.
December 18, 2013. Bitcoin is crashing from its highs. A BitcoinTalk user named GameKyuubi opens a bottle of whiskey and starts typing.
"I AM HODLING." First line: "I typed that title twice because I knew it was wrong the first time. Still wrong. w/e."
He ranted in all caps about being a bad trader. The core message was actually solid tbh: "YOU ONLY SELL IN A BEAR MARKET IF YOU ARE A GOOD DAY TRADER OR ILLUSIONED NOOB. The people inbetween hold."
The type became a meme within minutes. Then it became the defining word of an entire industry.
That post now has over 2,600 replies and nearly 800,000 views. His drunk misspelling is now the ticker symbol of VanEck's Bitcoin ETF: HODL.
A drunk forum rant became a Wall Street financial product. Nobody saw that coming.
THe post still captures something most traders learn the hard way. Trying to time very top and bottom is way harded than it looks.
So who's made more money, the traders with 14 monitors or the guy who got drunk and couldn't spell?
