Should there be a mandatory checklist comparing pcos versus endometriosis before doctors settle on either diagnosis?
I think this needs to be said plainly: pcos versus endometriosis gets treated far too casually by a lot of general practitioners, as if the two are basically interchangeable 'hormone problems' rather than two genuinely distinct conditions with different mechanisms and different treatment priorities.
When I look at how pcos vs endometriosis symptoms actually compare, irregular cycles and metabolic symptoms versus pain and lesion growth, it's clear these deserve very different diagnostic pathways. And yet I've seen countless posts, including from people in this community, describing being handed a PCOS diagnosis based on irregular cycles alone, with pain-focused symptoms basically ignored, or vice versa.
Controversial take: I genuinely think a standardized comparison checklist for pcos versus endometriosis, used at the first sign of overlapping symptoms, would catch more accurate dual or correct diagnoses than the current approach of picking whichever condition happens to fit the doctor's first instinct.
Did your doctor actually walk you through pcos vs endometriosis symptoms directly, comparing the two, or did they just settle on one without much discussion? Do you think a formal comparison tool like this would actually help, or would it get ignored like a lot of other proposed screening tools?
