Trying to Grow Beyond Mobile,But My Company Won’t Give Me the Opportunity
I’m a mobile dev with almost 4 YOE. Lately I feel like my growth has kinda stopped. I’ve been working almost only on mobile, but my role has slowly gone beyond that. I’m involved in design, mobile arch, backend discussions, and even some AI-related decisions. For more than 6 months, I’ve been asking my managers to let me work on some backend or GenAI stuff too which i really want to get into. Ive told them clearly that I don’t know the stacks yet. and m fine starting with small tasks like you’d give to a junior or intern and I just want to get into a real project and learn while working.
They’ve told me a few times that I’d get the chance. I even put in my papers once because I felt I was getting stuck but stayed after being told there would be opportunities.
6+ months later, still mostly doing the same mobile work although they have so many opening and projects i believe so using one more person on which they are already paying is beneficial for them also.
I know after work we can build skills and showcase projects but this is where i am tight - as my father recently was into an accident and after work i can't leave my mother isolated, beauce we only get 3-4 hour after work anyways.
So I’m kinda stuck and want some honest advice.
- Keep waiting/pushing internally for a backend/AI opportunity? I’ve already been asking for 6+ months and nothing has really happened.
- Start looking for another company where I can actually work across the stack? I’m already trying this, but haven’t had much luck so far.
I’m also trying to find a small startup/company that might let me work remotely and part-time on backend/AI stuff. I’m not looking for big money or a fancy title. I just want some real hands-on exposure and looking for remote part time or even weekend based opportunities.
For people who moved from mobile/frontend into backend, AI, or general software engineering, how did you do it? Really need some advice on it after trying all above things ?
