What to do with solo rat?

Had a pair of rats. One died today. 😢 Don't want to get any more rats. I know they like company. Should we just try to interact with the rat more until it passes? It is on the older side. Or should we give it up for adoption so it can live with other rats? Just want to do what is right by the surviving rat.
