Beginner question: does a more expensive gold nib actually write better?

Question

Hey everyone, I’m pretty new to the fountain pen world and I’d love your advice.

Right now I’m using a Lamy Safari with a medium nib, and I really enjoy how it writes. It’s smooth, reliable, and honestly it made me fall in love with fountain pens.

But I keep seeing pens with gold nibs that cost $500–$1000+, and I’m wondering… do they actually write better? Is the writing experience noticeably different, or is it more about craftsmanship, materials, and collecting?

Since I’m still a beginner, I’m not sure if I should just try another steel nib (maybe a fine or broad), or if it’s worth exploring something like a gold nib from Pilot, Sailor, Pelikan, etc.

What would you recommend for someone who likes the Safari medium but wants to try something “next level”?

Thanks for any advice — I’m excited to learn more from you all!
